Judging by reactions on various forums and blogs, ex-cLOUDDEAD member Yoni Wolf's Why? played one of the gigs of the year here in Dublin last weekend promoting their recent album "Alopecia" (on Anticon). I had a ticket but couldn't make it in the end. Double Gah.
I can't stop blasting the song "Fatalist Palmistry" on repeat these last few days. It's as catchy as chlamydia, a summery, fairly conventional indie-rock classic with glorious stream-of-consciousness lyrics like "I sleep on my back cos it's good for my spine/ and coffin rehearsal/ I know a psychic who reads her own palm/ and the findings are personal". Ok, maybe not everyone's cuppa, but if you've ever found yourself grinning at the cracked ramblings of Steve Malkmus or David Berman (who chose Why? as support on last year's Silver Jews US tour) you'll enjoy this tune and the rest of "Alopecia".
Here's "Fatalist Palmistry" and "Gnashville", which possibly is a better reflection of the darker, hip-hop influenced mood of the overall album.
